Low Estrogen Levels: Causes
Menopause is just one of the causes of low estrogen levels but women who had a hysterectomy, also suffer from low estrogen levels. Low estrogen levels can cause hormonal changes in young women which could be one of the reasons for a missed period. In some cases, certain medical conditions like migraines, panic attacks, depression and vaginal infections can be triggered due to low estrogen levels. One of the main causes of estrogen deficiency in women is menopause. Low body weight and excessive exercise are other causes of low estrogen levels. Contraceptive pills also eventually lead to estrogen deficiency. Certain illnesses can lead to low estrogen levels like Turner’s syndrome and thyroid disorders. In some cases, pituitary gland disorders can also lead to low estrogen levels in women.

Symptoms of low estrogen levels in young women can be very mild and can often go unnoticed. Sometime women who are nearing menopause, experience symptoms like hot flashes, dry skin and joint pain. Some women experience fatigue and memory lapse too. Night sweats in women is common when they are suffering from low estrogen levels. They experience forgetfulness and brain fog accompanied by difficulty in concentrating. Low libido and vaginal dryness are other symptoms which can easily go unnoticed. Rapid pulse rate, osteoarthritis, lower back pain and bloating are other symptoms of low estrogen levels in women. In most cases, these symptoms can be an underlying cause of other problems, therefore a test is required to detect the exact estrogen levels.

To treat low estrogen levels, many times patients are prescribed hormone replacement therapy, but this is a vicious circle as one’s body will not naturally produce the desired levels of estrogen with use of hormone replacement therapy. This approach also increases the risk of stroke, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. The best way to deal with low levels of estrogen is to take a low fat diet. Include loads of fruits and vegetables like yam, apples, cherries, flax seeds etc. and also increase the intake of meat, eggs and dairy products in your diet. Avoid cabbage, grapes, corn and onions. Some people say that estrogen herbs which are used to treat estrogen deficiency are quite beneficial but just like estrogen drug therapy, it can result in estrogen side effects too.
